Sciatica Pain Rehabilitation

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain radiating along the path of the sciatic nerve,
typically affecting the lower back, buttock, and down one leg.
It is most commonly caused by disc bulge or herniation, spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, or nerve root compression.
Sciatica Pain Rehabilitation focuses on relieving nerve irritation, restoring mobility, improving posture,
and strengthening supportive muscles to prevent recurrence.

Common Symptoms of Sciatica

  • Sharp, burning, or electric pain radiating down the leg
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
  • Lower back and buttock pain
  • Weakness in the affected leg
  • Increased pain with sitting, bending, or coughing
  • Difficulty walking due to nerve irritation
  • Pain relief when standing or lying down

Causes of Sciatica

  • Herniated or bulging lumbar disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Facet joint dysfunction
  • Muscle tightness or pelvic alignment issues
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Postural strain from prolonged sitting

Treatment & Rehabilitation Approach

At AwaHope, Sciatica Rehabilitation aims to reduce nerve compression, restore normal mobility,
and strengthen the spine for long-term relief.
Treatment is gentle, progressive, and tailored to the severity and cause of symptoms.

Treatment Methods

1. Manual Therapy

  • Joint mobilization to reduce spinal or pelvic restrictions
  • Soft tissue release for tight piriformis, glutes, and lumbar muscles
  • Myofascial techniques to reduce nerve pressure

2. Nerve Mobilization Techniques

  • Neural gliding (“nerve flossing”) to improve sciatic nerve mobility
  • Restores normal nerve movement and reduces irritation

3. BTL TECAR Therapy

Provides deep thermal stimulation to reduce inflammation, relax tight muscles,
and ease nerve-related pain.

4. BTL Ultrasound Therapy

Useful in reducing deep tissue inflammation and easing irritation around the sciatic nerve.

5. BTL Electrotherapy

Helps reduce sharp nerve pain, muscle spasms, and improves activation of weak lumbar muscles.

6. Lumbar & Pelvic Mobility Training

  • Gentle exercises to restore normal spine movement
  • Pelvic tilts and mobility drills
  • Stretching of tight muscles contributing to nerve compression

7. Strengthening Program

Focuses on stabilizing the spine and pelvis:

  • Core strengthening for lumbar support
  • Glute activation to reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve
  • Hamstring and hip strengthening for balanced movement

8. Posture & Ergonomics Training

  • Correct sitting and standing alignment
  • Workstation adjustments to avoid slouched posture
  • Safe bending, lifting, and movement techniques

9. Gait & Functional Movement Retraining

  • Correction of walking patterns that overload the spine
  • Functional training to reduce strain during daily activities

Recovery & Expectations

Recovery time varies depending on the cause of sciatica.
Many patients experience significant pain reduction within a few sessions,
especially when nerve decompression and strengthening are combined.
Long-term improvement requires consistent exercises and correcting posture and lifestyle habits.
