What is Mechanical Low Back Pain?
Mechanical low back pain is the most common type of back pain, caused by strain or dysfunction of the muscles, ligaments, joints,
or discs in the lower back. It is typically related to movement and posture, and often worsens with physical activity or prolonged sitting.
This condition does not involve nerve damage but can still significantly limit mobility and daily activities if not properly treated.
Symptoms
- Aching or sharp pain in the lower back
- Pain triggered by bending, lifting, twisting, or prolonged sitting
- Muscle tightness or spasms
- Stiffness, especially after rest
- Reduced range of motion in the lower back
- Pain that improves with rest and worsens with activity
Causes of Mechanical Low Back Pain
- Poor posture and prolonged sitting
- Weak core and back muscles
- Improper lifting techniques
- Muscle strain or ligament injury
- Repetitive bending or twisting
- Sudden movements or minor trauma
- Obesity or sedentary lifestyle
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on a clinical evaluation of posture, spinal mobility, muscle strength, and movement patterns.
Since mechanical pain does not usually involve nerve compression, imaging is only recommended externally when symptoms persist or are unexplained.
Treatment & Rehabilitation Approach
At AwaHope, treatment focuses on relieving pain, improving mobility, correcting posture, and strengthening core muscles to prevent future episodes.
Rehabilitation is individualized and designed to restore comfortable, functional movement.
Treatment Methods
1. Manual Therapy
- Soft tissue release to reduce muscle tension
- Joint mobilization to improve spinal movement
- Myofascial techniques to relieve stiffness
2. BTL TECAR Therapy
Enhances circulation, reduces inflammation, and accelerates tissue recovery in strained or irritated structures.
3. BTL Ultrasound Therapy
Provides deep tissue treatment to improve flexibility, reduce stiffness, and support tissue healing.
4. BTL Electrotherapy
Reduces muscle spasms, relieves pain, and improves neuromuscular activation.
5. Exercise Therapy & Strengthening
Programs typically include:
- Core strengthening for improved spinal support
- Hip and lower back strengthening exercises
- Flexibility training for hamstrings, hip flexors, and gluteal muscles
- Movement retraining to restore proper body mechanics
- Postural correction for sitting, standing, and lifting
Posture & Ergonomic Training
- Guidance on optimal workstation setup
- Education on proper lifting and movement strategies
- Techniques to reduce daily strain on the lower back
Heat & Cold Therapy
- Heat therapy to relax tight muscles
- Cold therapy to reduce acute pain and inflammation
Recovery & Expectations
Most patients experience noticeable improvement within a short period. Consistent rehabilitation significantly reduces recurrence and
helps maintain a strong, stable lower back. Long-term adherence to exercises and posture corrections is highly recommended.
