Cervical Radiculopathy Rehabilitation

What is Cervical Radiculopathy?

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a nerve in the neck becomes compressed or irritated, often due to a herniated disc,
degenerative changes, or narrowing of the spinal canal. This condition can cause neck pain radiating into the arm,
numbness, tingling, or weakness in the upper limb. It can significantly affect daily activities, grip strength, and posture
if not treated properly.

Symptoms

  • Neck pain radiating to the shoulder, arm, or hand
  • Numbness or tingling in the arm or fingers
  • Weakness in the shoulder, arm, or hand muscles
  • Pain that increases with neck movement or certain positions
  • Reduced neck mobility
  • Burning or shooting pain along the nerve pathway

Causes of Cervical Radiculopathy

  • Cervical disc herniation
  • Degenerative cervical disc disease
  • Bone spurs or arthritis in the neck
  • Narrowing of the spinal canal (stenosis)
  • Poor posture and prolonged forward head position
  • Repetitive strain or overuse of neck and shoulder muscles

Diagnosis

Diagnosis includes assessment of neck mobility, nerve tension, strength, and sensory changes.
External imaging such as MRI or X-ray may be required to confirm nerve compression and identify the underlying cause.

Treatment & Rehabilitation Approach

At AwaHope, rehabilitation focuses on reducing nerve compression, relieving pain, restoring cervical mobility,
and strengthening muscles that support proper posture and spinal alignment. Treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s symptoms and nerve involvement.

Treatment Methods

1. Manual Therapy

  • Cervical mobilization to reduce nerve compression
  • Soft tissue release around the neck and upper back
  • Myofascial techniques to relieve tension and improve movement

2. Cervical Traction Therapy

Helps decompress cervical discs and increase space for the affected nerve, reducing pain and radiating symptoms.

3. BTL TECAR Therapy

Provides deep thermal stimulation to reduce inflammation, relax tight muscles, and improve blood flow in the cervical region.

4. BTL Ultrasound Therapy

Supports tissue healing and decreases deep muscle irritation contributing to nerve compression.

5. BTL Electrotherapy

Helps relieve nerve-related pain, decrease muscle spasms, and improve neuromuscular function.

6. Nerve Gliding Exercises

Improves nerve mobility and helps reduce numbness, tingling, and radiating pain in the arm.

7. Strengthening & Posture Training

Programs include:

  • Deep neck flexor strengthening
  • Upper back and shoulder stability exercises
  • Posture correction to reduce cervical strain
  • Movement retraining for daily activities

8. Stretching & Mobility Techniques

  • Gentle neck stretching to improve mobility
  • Chest and shoulder stretches to reduce forward posture

9. Heat & Cold Therapy

  • Heat to relax tight cervical muscles
  • Cold to reduce nerve inflammation during flare-ups

Recovery & Expectations

Most patients experience noticeable improvement with consistent therapy. Treating the underlying cause of nerve compression
and strengthening supporting muscles are essential for long-term recovery and preventing recurrence.
