Sciatica Rehabilitation

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition where the sciatic nerve — the longest nerve in the body — becomes compressed or irritated.
This typically causes pain that radiates from the lower back into the buttock, thigh, leg, or foot.
Sciatica is usually caused by disc herniation, spinal stenosis, muscle tightness, or inflammation around the nerve.
The pain can range from mild discomfort to severe, sharp, or burning sensations.

Symptoms

  • Sharp or burning pain radiating down the leg
  • Numbness or tingling along the sciatic nerve pathway
  • Pain worsened by sitting, bending, or lifting
  • Lower back discomfort or stiffness
  • Weakness in the leg or foot (in advanced cases)
  • Difficulty standing or walking during flare-ups

Causes of Sciatica

  • Herniated or bulging lumbar disc
  • Spinal stenosis causing nerve compression
  • Piriformis syndrome (muscular compression)
  • Degenerative lumbar disc disease
  • Inflammation around lumbar nerve roots
  • Improper lifting or repetitive strain
  • Prolonged sitting or poor posture

Diagnosis

Diagnosis includes a clinical evaluation of nerve tension, muscle strength, mobility, and pain patterns.
External imaging such as MRI or CT scan may be recommended to determine the cause and severity of nerve compression.

Treatment & Rehabilitation Approach

At AwaHope, sciatica rehabilitation focuses on relieving nerve pressure, reducing inflammation, restoring lumbar mobility,
and strengthening supportive muscles. Treatment plans are individualized according to the patient’s symptoms and underlying cause.

Treatment Methods

1. Manual Therapy

  • Mobilization of the lumbar spine to reduce nerve irritation
  • Soft tissue release around the hips, lower back, and gluteal muscles
  • Myofascial release to decrease tension affecting the sciatic nerve

2. Spinal Decompression Therapy

Gently stretches the spine to reduce pressure on compressed nerve roots and relieve radiating leg pain.

3. BTL TECAR Therapy

Provides deep thermal treatment to relax muscles, reduce inflammation, and enhance circulation around affected tissues.

4. BTL Ultrasound Therapy

Helps decrease deep soft tissue inflammation and improves flexibility in the lumbar region.

5. BTL Electrotherapy

Relieves nerve pain, reduces muscle spasms, and improves neuromuscular activation.

6. Nerve Gliding Exercises

Improves mobility of the sciatic nerve and reduces symptoms of numbness, tingling, and radiating pain.

7. Stretching & Mobility Training

Programs include:

  • Hamstring, gluteal, and hip mobility exercises
  • Lower back stretching routines
  • Postural flexibility drills

8. Strengthening & Stabilization Exercises

  • Core strengthening to support the lumbar spine
  • Hip and glute strengthening for balanced movement
  • Lower back stabilization techniques
  • Functional strengthening for daily activities

9. Heat & Cold Therapy

  • Heat to relax tight muscles around the sciatic nerve
  • Cold to reduce nerve inflammation during flare-ups

Recovery & Expectations

Many patients experience significant relief with consistent therapy.
Treatment success depends on addressing the root cause of nerve compression and strengthening the muscles that support proper spinal alignment.
