What is a Cervicogenic Headache?
A cervicogenic headache is a type of headache caused by dysfunction or irritation in the structures of the neck,
such as the cervical joints, discs, or surrounding muscles. Pain typically begins in the neck and radiates to the head,
often causing one-sided headache, eye or forehead pain, and limited neck movement. Poor posture, neck strain, arthritis,
or previous injury commonly contribute to this condition.
Symptoms
- Headache that starts in the neck and radiates upward
- One-sided head or facial pain
- Neck stiffness or reduced mobility
- Pain triggered by neck movement or sustained posture
- Pressure or tightness around the forehead or eye
- Shoulder and upper back muscle tension
Causes of Cervicogenic Headache
- Poor posture or prolonged forward head position
- Cervical disc degeneration or arthritis
- Muscle imbalance around the neck and shoulders
- Previous neck injuries such as whiplash
- Limited cervical mobility due to stiffness or strain
- Compressed or irritated cervical nerves
Diagnosis
Diagnosis includes a detailed assessment of neck mobility, posture, muscle tension, and headache patterns.
Specific clinical tests help determine whether the pain originates from cervical structures.
External imaging may be used to rule out other causes when necessary.
Treatment & Rehabilitation Approach
At AwaHope, treatment focuses on relieving cervical tension, improving joint mobility, correcting posture,
and reducing headache frequency and intensity. Rehabilitation is tailored to each patient’s symptoms and lifestyle demands.
Treatment Methods
1. Manual Therapy
- Joint mobilization to improve cervical spine movement
- Soft tissue release for neck, shoulder, and upper back muscles
- Myofascial techniques to reduce tension and referred pain
2. BTL TECAR Therapy
Reduces muscle tightness, improves circulation, and promotes healing in strained cervical structures.
3. BTL Ultrasound Therapy
Helps decrease deep muscle stiffness and enhance pain relief around the neck and upper back.
4. BTL Electrotherapy
Reduces pain intensity, controls muscle spasms, and improves neuromuscular function.
5. Trigger Point Release & Dry Needling
Targets knots and tight muscles that refer pain to the head, helping reduce headache frequency.
6. Posture Correction & Strengthening Exercises
Programs include:
- Strengthening deep neck flexors and upper back muscles
- Stretching tight chest and neck muscles
- Movement retraining to correct forward head posture
- Ergonomic training for work and daily tasks
7. Mobility & Relaxation Techniques
- Gentle mobility exercises to reduce stiffness
- Breathing and relaxation techniques to ease tension
Recovery & Expectations
Most patients experience fewer and less intense headaches with consistent therapy.
Long-term improvement relies on correcting posture, strengthening supportive muscles,
and addressing underlying cervical dysfunction.
