What is Lumbar Disc Herniation?
Lumbar disc herniation occurs when the soft inner material of a spinal disc pushes out through a weakened area of the disc wall.
This can compress nearby nerves, causing lower back pain, leg pain (sciatica), numbness, or muscle weakness.
It is one of the most common causes of chronic low back pain and mobility limitation.
Symptoms
- Lower back pain that may radiate to the buttocks or legs
- Tingling, numbness, or burning sensations (sciatica)
- Muscle weakness or reduced leg strength
- Pain that worsens when bending, lifting, or sitting
- Difficulty walking or standing for long periods
Causes of Lumbar Disc Herniation
- Aging and natural disc degeneration
- Heavy lifting or sudden movement
- Poor posture or prolonged sitting
- Weak core muscles
- Obesity or sedentary lifestyle
- Traumatic injury or repeated strain
Diagnosis
Diagnosis begins with a clinical evaluation that includes:
- Assessment of posture, movement, and reflexes
- Neurological testing for sensation and muscle strength
- External MRI or CT scans when needed to confirm the herniation
Treatment & Rehabilitation Approach
At AwaHope Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Centre, our goal is to relieve nerve compression, reduce inflammation,
improve spinal mobility, and restore a pain-free, functional lifestyle. We use advanced physiotherapy technologies
combined with personalized exercise therapy for optimal recovery.
Treatment Methods
1. Manual Therapy
- Spinal mobilization to reduce nerve compression
- Soft tissue release for tight lumbar and hip muscles
- Myofascial techniques to reduce tension and improve flexibility
2. Mechanical & Spinal Decompression Therapy
Gently stretches the spine, reduces disc pressure, and relieves nerve irritation.
Highly effective for disc bulges and sciatica-related pain.
3. BTL TECAR Therapy
Deep thermal therapy that accelerates tissue healing, reduces inflammation, and improves blood flow in the lumbar region.
4. BTL Electrotherapy
Decreases nerve pain and muscle spasms, activates weakened muscles, and improves flexibility.
5. BTL Ultrasound Therapy
Reduces inflammation inside the disc area, enhances soft tissue repair, and decreases stiffness.
6. Dry Needling
Releases deep muscle tightness and reduces nerve compression caused by muscle spasms.
7. Heat & Cold Therapy
- Heat relaxes tight muscles
- Cold reduces inflammation and acute pain
8. Exercise Therapy & Core Strengthening
Our customized rehabilitation program includes:
- Core strengthening to support the spine
- Stretching exercises for hamstrings, glutes, and lumbar muscles
- Mobility exercises to restore natural spinal movement
- Posture training to prevent future disc problems
Recovery & Expectations
Most patients notice improvement within the first sessions. Recovery time varies with severity,
but is greatly enhanced with consistent physiotherapy and proper exercise routines.
In Our Centre…
At AwaHope, we combine advanced technologies, expert physiotherapists, and personalized rehabilitation plans
to reduce pain, correct spinal mechanics, and prevent future disc issues. Our aim is to help every patient
restore mobility, reduce reliance on medication, and return to daily activities with confidence and comfort.
