Spinal Canal Stenosis Rehabilitation

What is Spinal Canal Stenosis?

Spinal canal stenosis is a condition where the space within the spinal canal becomes narrowed, placing pressure on the spinal cord
or nerve roots. It most commonly affects the lumbar and cervical regions and can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the limbs.
Stenosis often results from age-related degeneration, disc bulging, arthritis, or thickening of ligaments around the spine.

Symptoms

  • Lower back or neck pain
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs
  • Leg weakness or heaviness when walking
  • Pain relieved by bending forward or sitting
  • Reduced balance or coordination
  • Radiating pain to the limbs (similar to sciatica or radiculopathy)
  • Stiffness in the spine

Causes of Spinal Canal Stenosis

  • Degenerative changes in discs and joints
  • Thickening of spinal ligaments
  • Disc bulging or herniation
  • Bone spurs due to arthritis
  • Congenital narrow spinal canal
  • Trauma or injury to the spine
  • Postural imbalances that increase spinal stress

Diagnosis

Diagnosis involves assessing mobility, neurological function, posture, and movement patterns.
External imaging such as MRI or CT scan is typically required to confirm the extent and location of stenosis.

Treatment & Rehabilitation Approach

At AwaHope, rehabilitation focuses on relieving nerve pressure, improving spinal flexibility, strengthening supportive muscles,
and enhancing walking tolerance. Treatment is individualized based on symptom severity and stenosis location.

Treatment Methods

1. Manual Therapy

  • Mobilization of spinal joints to improve movement
  • Soft tissue release for tight back, neck, and hip muscles
  • Myofascial techniques to reduce tension and improve mobility

2. Spinal Decompression Therapy

Helps reduce pressure on compressed nerves and relieve radiating pain, especially in lumbar stenosis.

3. BTL TECAR Therapy

Provides deep thermal stimulation that reduces inflammation, improves circulation, and promotes tissue healing.

4. BTL Ultrasound Therapy

Helps soften tight tissues and reduce irritation around affected spinal segments.

5. BTL Electrotherapy

Relieves nerve-related pain, reduces muscle spasms, and improves neuromuscular activation.

6. Flexibility & Mobility Training

  • Thoracic and lumbar mobility drills
  • Stretching tight hip flexors, hamstrings, and lower back muscles
  • Exercises that reduce spinal compression

7. Strengthening & Stabilization Exercises

Programs include:

  • Core strengthening for improved spinal support
  • Hip and glute strengthening to improve walking mechanics
  • Upper back exercises to support posture

8. Posture & Movement Retraining

  • Training positions and movements that reduce nerve compression
  • Improving sitting, standing, and walking postures

9. Heat & Cold Therapy

  • Heat to relax tight muscles and improve mobility
  • Cold to reduce inflammation during flare-ups

Recovery & Expectations

Physiotherapy significantly improves symptoms in most cases by reducing nerve compression and strengthening supportive muscles.
Some chronic or advanced stenosis cases may require long-term management, but many patients achieve better mobility and reduced pain
through consistent therapy.
