What is Thoracic Pain?
Thoracic pain refers to discomfort or stiffness in the mid-back region, located between the neck and the lower back.
It can result from muscle strain, poor posture, joint dysfunction, disc irritation, or conditions affecting the ribs and thoracic spine.
Although less common than cervical or lumbar pain, thoracic pain can significantly affect breathing, mobility, and daily activities.
Symptoms
- Aching or sharp pain in the mid-back
- Stiffness or limited movement in the thoracic spine
- Pain that worsens with deep breathing or twisting
- Muscle tightness along the upper and mid-back
- Radiating pain around the ribs or chest (musculoskeletal origin)
- Postural fatigue, especially after long sitting
Causes of Thoracic Pain
- Poor posture, especially rounded shoulders
- Prolonged sitting or computer work
- Muscle strain from lifting or twisting
- Thoracic joint dysfunction
- Disc irritation or mild bulging
- Scoliosis or spinal alignment issues
- Stress and tension affecting upper back muscles
Diagnosis
Diagnosis includes a clinical assessment of thoracic mobility, posture, muscle tightness, and joint mechanics.
External imaging such as X-ray or MRI may be recommended in cases with persistent or unexplained symptoms.
Treatment & Rehabilitation Approach
At AwaHope, treatment aims to relieve pain, restore mobility in the thoracic spine, improve posture,
and strengthen supporting muscles to prevent recurrence. Rehabilitation is tailored to each patient’s condition and lifestyle demands.
Treatment Methods
1. Manual Therapy
- Thoracic joint mobilization to improve spinal movement
- Soft tissue release for tight upper and mid-back muscles
- Myofascial release to reduce tension and improve flexibility
2. BTL TECAR Therapy
Provides deep heat to reduce muscle stiffness, improve circulation, and enhance healing in the thoracic region.
3. BTL Ultrasound Therapy
Reduces deep muscle tension and supports recovery from thoracic soft tissue irritation.
4. BTL Electrotherapy
Helps relieve pain, decrease muscle spasms, and improve neuromuscular activation.
5. Posture Correction & Strengthening
Training typically includes:
- Strengthening upper back and scapular stabilizer muscles
- Stretching tight chest and shoulder muscles
- Thoracic extension exercises to counter poor posture
- Mobility drills to improve spinal rotation and flexibility
6. Breathing & Rib Mobility Training
- Exercises that improve rib expansion and thoracic mobility
- Breathing techniques to reduce tension in upper back muscles
7. Heat & Cold Therapy
- Heat for muscle relaxation and mobility improvement
- Cold for reducing inflammation during acute pain episodes
Recovery & Expectations
Most patients experience significant improvement through targeted physiotherapy.
Restoring thoracic mobility and improving posture are key to long-term comfort and preventing recurrence.
