What is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is a condition where the nerves or blood vessels between the neck and upper chest (the thoracic outlet)
become compressed. This compression can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the neck, shoulder, and arm.
TOS is often related to poor posture, tight muscles, trauma, repetitive overhead activity, or anatomical variations.
Symptoms
- Pain in the neck, shoulder, or arm
- Numbness or tingling radiating down the arm
- Weakness in the shoulder or hand
- Coldness or color changes in the arm or hand in vascular TOS
- Heaviness or fatigue during arm elevation
- Reduced grip strength
Causes of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
- Poor posture, especially forward head and rounded shoulders
- Repetitive overhead work or sports activities
- Trauma such as whiplash or falls
- Muscle tightness in the neck, chest, and shoulder girdle
- Cervical rib or anatomical variations
- Carrying heavy loads on the shoulders
Diagnosis
Diagnosis involves evaluating posture, nerve mobility, shoulder mechanics, and muscle tightness.
Specific clinical tests help identify nerve or vascular involvement.
External imaging or vascular studies may be recommended in certain cases.
Treatment & Rehabilitation Approach
At AwaHope, rehabilitation focuses on relieving nerve or vascular compression, correcting posture, improving mobility,
and strengthening the muscles that support proper alignment. Treatment is individualized based on the type and severity of TOS.
Treatment Methods
1. Manual Therapy
- Soft tissue release for neck, chest, and shoulder muscles
- Joint mobilization of the cervical spine and upper ribs
- Myofascial techniques to improve mobility and reduce tension
2. Nerve Gliding Exercises
Helps improve nerve mobility and reduce symptoms of tingling, numbness, or radiating pain.
3. BTL TECAR Therapy
Provides deep thermal treatment to reduce inflammation, relieve muscle tightness, and enhance healing.
4. BTL Ultrasound Therapy
Improves soft tissue mobility and reduces irritation in tight or compressed areas.
5. Posture Correction & Strengthening
Rehabilitation programs include:
- Strengthening of upper back and scapular muscles
- Stretching tight chest and neck muscles
- Training to correct forward head posture and rounded shoulders
- Ergonomic corrections for work and daily activities
6. Breathing & Rib Mobility Training
- Exercises to improve rib expansion and thoracic mobility
- Diaphragmatic breathing to reduce tension in accessory muscles
7. Heat & Cold Therapy
- Heat to improve mobility and reduce stiffness
- Cold to manage inflammation during flare-ups
Recovery & Expectations
Many patients experience significant improvement with targeted physiotherapy.
Consistent posture correction and strengthening are essential to long-term recovery and symptom control.
In Our Centre…
At AwaHope, we combine advanced physiotherapy technologies, precise manual therapy, and specialized exercise programs
to effectively treat thoracic outlet syndrome. Our goal is to relieve compression, restore mobility, and help patients
return to daily activities with comfort and confidence.
